Highmoor week commencing 8th October

Date: 12th Oct 2018 @ 12:02pm

We have had another busy week in Highmoor. Our week started with meeting 2 new members of the Highmoor team - Miss Ivens and Miss Baker. They are student teachers and will be with us for 6 weeks. They have been helping groups of us with our work and learning all about what it's like being a teacher in a school like Peppard. Over the next 5 weeks they will be teaching us some of our lessons with help from Mrs Claridge and Miss Tillotson.

In maths we started our week with doubling and halving numbers by partitioning and recombining numbers. The year 3s were focussing on 2 digit numbers and the year 4s were looking at 3 digit numbers. We moved on to look at some times tables facts. We looked at the way the 3,4 and 5 times tables can be doubled to give the 6, 8 and 10 times tables. We used the times tables facts we had learned to write some corresponding division facts.

Literacy started by looking at personification. We studied 2 of Roger McGough's poems and looked at the ways he uses personification to bring his poems to life. We then thought about how we could use personification to describe everyday objects. This is trickier than we first thought! Towards the end of the week, we discussed the meaning of fiction and non-fiction and created a mind map of examples for each. We discussed the different features found in each of the text types and the times when each would be used. We carried on reading our eBook and discovered what life is like in Japan. We read about life at home and the traditions of sitting on the floor to eat, we learned that at school children have regular earthquake drills and we also learned that Japan is the home of Mount Fuji, an active volcano.

In History we continued to look at life in Victorian times for children. In Geography, we created a map to show the location of the major rivers in the UK.

Next week - we WILL be swimming so please remember swimming kits on Thursday morning.
