Highmoor 8th March

Date: 8th Mar 2024 @ 2:35pm

Welcome to our week in Highmoor.

We have been adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator in maths. We converted between improper fractions and mixed numbers and moved on to looking at fractions of amounts.

In literacy we we started to read the picture book 'The Tin Forest' and wrote diary entries and setting descriptions based on the beautiful, detailed illustrations. We used a thesaurus to find synonyms for 'sad' and 'lonely' and used these words and phrases in our writing. We spent some time analysing the language used in the text and discussed what images and feelings it evoked. We are also studying dilemma stories with a focus on 'The Great Kapok Tree' and today improvised dilemma stories set around a great tree and used our powers of persuasion to save it! We continued to read Butterfly Lion as our class read.

In geography we investigated desert biomes and thought about the climate in both hot and cold deserts and used maps to locate the world's 10 biggest deserts.

We used Scratch programming in computing again. This week we had to identify specific code used in an animation and we then changed the animation ourselves, each of us deciding how we wanted to alter it by adding extra sprites, changing how sprites interacted with each other, extra dialogue or movement. We had some very interesting new animations!

This morning we planted some flowers in our science lesson to monitor what happens to them when they are deprived of the things they need to grow. We shall see what happens over the next few weeks!

Our orienteering topic in PE is proving very popular, we had lots of fun making our own maps of the playground and then 'buried treasure' in 3 different places marking the location with an x on our maps. Our partners then had to decipher our maps to locate the treasure! We also continued to learn about the game of hockey and improved on our ball control skills.

Well done to everyone on their amazing costumes today in our celebration of World Book Day. Thank you to everyone for the effort involved. The children loved being their special characters and seeing each other's outfits.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and that all Mummies have an extra special day on Sunday. Look out for cards and Spanish gifts in children's bags if they forget to give them to you on Sunday!
