Welcome back and happy new year!

Firstly, thank you so much for our Christmas presents.

This week, the children have come back to school in fine form!

We have been busy in phonics learning the vowel digraphs

ai, ee, igh, oa

We have practised all the graphemes that we learned last term.

In maths, we have been learning about zero and we have been practising our subitising skills (recognising a quantity without counting).  We have done both perceptual subitising and conceptual subitising.

Our topic is stories from around the world and we have been doing activities around them.  We have been to Antartica this week.  We have read the story 'The Runaway iceberg' and learned about Antartica, the animals that are there and about the first explorers.  The children enjoyed carrying out a science experiment that involved seeing whether hot water, cold water, salt or sugar melted ice the quickest.  We made some great predictions and observations.

We enjoyed doing some art work with egg boxes to make penguins and icebergs.  We also did some drawings of what we might take to Antartica.
